Bombay

The third film that we watched was Bombay. Bombay is a Hindu Film that is about a Hindu man, Shekhar Mishra Narayan who falls in love with a Muslim woman, Shaila Bano. After Shekhar sees Shaila he tries everything possible to get to know her better and ultimately get her to fall in love with him. They eventually get to know each other and fall in love with one another. Unfortunately, in India at the time, around the early 90’s, it was prohibited for Hindu’s and Muslims to be in any sort of relationship because there was conflict between them at the current time. After both families disapprove of the relationship that both of them have Shekhar moves away to the Bombay City where it was more acceptable for Hindus and Muslims to be established. Shekhar would always write to Shaila urging her to come to the city to live with him since he had his own place and had a job of a local reporter for the local newspaper. After Shailas father found out that she had been responding to Shekhars letters, her father smacked her ultimately causing her to depart from their small city and leave to Bombay to meet with Shekhar. As soon as she got there they immediately got married and soon enough had kids themselves, a set of male twins. While being there they both had not seen their family, which led to both their fathers and Shailas mother to come and visit. Although both sides argued on whether the boys were going to be either Muslim or Hindu both sides managed to get along eventually. It was then after that the City of Bombay was being invaded by Right-Winged Hindus making sure they got rid of all Muslims. It was unfortunate that both fathers and mother of Shaila all passed away because the house in where they were staying at got lit into fire causing them all to burn and die. The madness in the city eventually ended when both sides came to an agreement to end the violence.
The theme of the movie was that no matter what beliefs you have you should always pursue the one that you love and continue loving that person. The film was also in Bombay, which was a modern day Indian town. I personally like Bombay except for the fact that every minute there was a Bollywood musical. But then again that’s how they promote their music through the movies.
